Erin Georgen on the Issues

Three of the five board seats will be filled by brand new board members by December 1, 2019, or sooner. What problems, if any, would this create for the district? If elected, how will you handle any issues created by the instant turnover?

With any turnover there is potential for delays as New board members becoming oriented and when the majority of the members are new it could delay important votes. One of my best skills is that I am extremely flexible and adapt quickly. I’ve already begun learning as much as I can to prepare and will …

What issues, if any, do you believe exist in the special education program in SPS? How would you address them as a board member?.

I have concerns about the use of isolations rooms with our special education students and what effect the recent reductions in staffing might have on the quality of our Special Education services. In addition, many parents find that there is a hole in the resources available for students who are struggling, but may not qualify …

Behavioral Intervention (BI) classroom massively improved my daughters experience at school and helped me succeed as a working parent by ending the constant Suspensions from school. It took entirely too long to get those services because the aren’t available at every school and requires us to transfer. I’d like to see every school in the …

If elected to the Spokane Public Schools board of directors, how would you work to foster safety at all schools? More specifically, I’d like to hear your views on the ENTIRE Safe Havens report – not just the issue of arming resource officers and/or teachers, but its other observations.

The Safe Haven report will be a useful tool in developing better safety measures and practices in the district. I will work to make sure suggested improvements to policies, emergency response plans, and staff training at each school are completed as quickly as possible. This includes working with local police to ensure clear and effective …

what other pre-emptive measures (social-emotional learning, MTSS. etc.) might schools employ to keep children and staffers safe?

The district is already implementing social-emotional learning curriculum. This is an effective way for teachers to connect with students and to reduce suspensions and expulsions. I also believe each school in the district should also have a Behavioral Intervention classroom and implement effective early interventions to support families and students when they are struggling, and …

Should teaching be regulated by the Federal, State or Local government? Why?

I believe that it is appropriate for there to be national standards for education, but I also believe that administrative authority should be local. Those closest to the community and the students being served will be best able to develop strategies for helping students overcome the challenges each may face academically.

Should teaching resources and books be determined by the Federal, State or Local government? Why?

Similarly to the above question, I think it is appropriate for our federal legislators and presidential administrations to work together to establish standards for curriculum, but choosing actual textbooks and materials should be done through local government entities. Textbooks being dictated by state governments has already lead to virtual monopolies in the textbook industry and …
